Lobbyists, the American economy, and pastoral ministry.

Many of the organizations listed at http://www.lobbywatch.org/lm_profiles.html, with names that sound "non-profit", neutral or "bipartisan", are lobby groups on the payroll of large corporations from the oil & gas, pharmaceutical, health/medical, financial (insurance, banking), telecommunications, nuclear, airline, and other large industries. The people at the very very top of industries such as these want to control the money flow of the other 99.99%. The adage "80% of all wealth is controlled by the other 20%" expired a long time back in the USA, where it's more like 90-10 now, and the supremely rich won't stop till it's as close to 100-0 as possible (in the USA at least...I don't know about other countries).

Unfortunately, using these "lobby" groups, these corporations influence and manipulate, with nearly 100% success (!), nearly every decision made by the American government that financially affects every single large corporation that does business in the US. For all practical purposes, the American government, since many decades, is fully controlled and run by corporate giants using lobbyists as proxy. :(

You know what the sad thing is? It's virtually impossible to stop this disgusting (it's not strong enough a word for what's happening) transformation in the American economy. With a few decades, every social stratum from the below poverty line (BPL) to the upper-middle class in the USA (yes, there is a huge BPL class in the US, and it's growing rapidly) will all shift to lower strata. No one will be spared, safe the minuscule few who will benefit enormously if taxes are lowered. These large corporations have always, and will continue to do everything to positively affect the bank balances of ONLY those at the very very top. The rest of those who work in those corporations are not benefited at all. If you have been fooled into thinking that the wealth the uber-elite are amassing will trickle down to you, it's not your fault. Their propaganda machine (read "FOX News" and "The Washington Post") is supremely effective. Workers' unions exist to prevent such abuse, but lawmakers in each state in America, pressured by these un-ethical, wholly un-Christian lobbyists, are slowly eliminating unions and workers' rights,

No use in me continuing to speak about these things because the hopelessness, "unstoppability" and inevitability of the situation is such. This is the reason why pastoral, clerical, and counseling work is going to be paramount in the Church's ministry in the US in the coming decades. Churches have to financially brace themselves to support such an endeavor starting yesterday because there will be no funding from the government for such things in the future. The work to be done is, and will be, huge. Now you can never say that i never informed you. All this may sound doomsday-like, but my background is in corporate finance, and i can tell you that it's not going to be pretty in the USofA in the decades to come.

electronic world addiction

The sudden rush of what i could do with my new found freedom was exhilarating. Turned out to be a momentary delusion. You see, my laptop battery has possibly run its course - 24 months of heavy use. Or perhaps it's the charger...will get someone to look at it today.

After coming back from morning prayer at 6:30am, upon entering my room, i started making a mental list of the things i could do with the prodigal son who'd returned - free time after lilyo/sapro. To my simultanious delight and chagrin, i was online in moments, thanks to the Opera Mini browser and the Vodafone internet connection on my sufficient Nokia X2-01 cellphone.

It's hard to stay away from the routine of checking my fav websites in the morning: malankaraorthodox.tv, ICON, facebook, hotmail, twitter, motorauthority, alternet, bbcnews, espnf1, insideline, motortrend, caranddriver, motorcycle, cycleworld, and now blogger.com. :(

Accidental? or the Holy Spirit (HS)? or HS +++?

Things keep unfolding, conspiring, pushing, nudging, shoving, interrupting, stopping, and preventing us...this is followed by more nudging, pushing, shoving, etc. Who's doing these things, and why?

The minor events/incidents that happen in our daily life could well be a silent cacophony of heavenly hosts led by the HS trying to help us get to where we need to go, urging us to do things His way on a daily, hourly basis, while the pseudo-real set of fallen heavenly hosts try their darnedest to score the ultimate victory - getting humans to be impenitent i.e. a state of not repenting.

The reason for the above amphigory (something nonsensical especially in an attempted poetic style) is that someone called me Sham instead of Shaun. Some truth to it, perhaps? Some truth to it in all our lives perhaps? The desert fathers would disagree with the latter question/phrasing - they'd maintain that they themselves, and no one else, are shams. Is one in my position allowed to even speak of such things publicly? I wish i didn't have to sanitize these thoughts.

What are we to do then, when faced with the onslaught of those pseudo-real fallen hosts? Take the fight to them! A song immediately comes to mind - Sabine Baring-Gould's verse on spiritual warfare: "Onward, Christian soldiers, marching as to war, with the Cross of Jesus going on before." Martyrs, saints, and confessors trod the steps of Jesus, each having successfully carried their own cross, and it behooves us to follow their brave, unflinching ways. Yes, very tough to enflesh, but with enough sacrifice, it's assuredly feasible.

Sh'himo, Rain and Coffee

First blog post in a while. I think i had another blogger account, but haven't a clue as to where it went. LOL. :)

Like rejoining a marathon after taking numerous breaks, we continue forging (trudging, on some days - it's a tough job) ahead with recording the Sh'himo (book of daily prayers) at our church's digital recording studio here in Kottayam. Recorded all day yesterday. Went there today morning as planned, but the sub-deacon who was to sing with me was busy supervising the removal of junk lovingly accumulated over decades at a particular institution. Wasn't his fault that he was unable to come for the recording as he was simply following orders.

Since i was already at the studio, we recorded some music for fun: Tubayk Idto (Paulose shleeha) in all tones except 4 and 6 (was doing it from memory) and Sohdaw athoon in tone 2, a particular favorite of mine. Let me know if you need them. Warning: they're untouched, rough recordings that portray well the many defects in my voice. Listen at your own peril. ;)

Have to take 2 Anglo-Saxon Americans to Kottayam town for some shopping, which reminds me of the coffee break i had last evening with Fr Aswin Fernandis, who's here to teach a short course in Iconography. He has an amazing personality with immense untapped potential.

Tomorrow: Have to attend kudumba yogam youth meeting in the morning.
Sunday: Undecided as to where to go to church. Will perhaps join Aswin achen.

Why is my table fan's voice gone? It has just started raining again. Heavily. Time for a thick, strong coffee.
